Tomkins is obviously supremely talented. The trouble is that, like many top English players, his development is in danger of reaching a plateau. Teams are now not only aware of what he is going to do, but they're finding ways to stop him doing it too. Even Featherstone dealt with him pretty effectively the other week.
At this stage of his career, he needs to get beyond running round teams and work on the 'brains' part of his game. When to pass, when to switch the play, what sort of kick to put in. If he doesn't, he'll still be a fine player but a limited one. I get the impression that a number of Wigan fans are getting annoyed with him for being a 'hogger'.
I'd really like to see him go on to better things because England are in need of a world-class halfback in 2013. Who knows, maybe one day he'll get a chance to play for the club he supported as a young boy.
As for Hodgson, he is absolute class when he turns it on like he did yesterday, a Rolls Royce of a player. If he continues to get that sort of go-forward from the pack, he and Briers will be a pretty tasty proposition again come the meaty end of the season.
